Why We Are Different

Our Core Beliefs, Values & Philosophy

ASDFN is led by a former refugee, Juanis K. Lual, who spent seven years in a refugee camp similar to those in Gambella. Juanis’ own personal experience in addition to his education makes him an expert in humanitarian crisis. He has experienced the obstacles faced in this very important work from both sides. We are an INGO that believes that we can, should and will change the world by fighting to reduce extreme poverty. We believe displaced peoples deserve better lives and better standards of living for themselves and their communities. We believe Africa has some of the most untapped potential of any continent in the world and that Africans can and will lead the movement for sustainable development.

Our Core Values

Inclusiveness, Diversity, Social Equity and Do No Harm: we have been down this road before and always respect indigenous peoples and their collective communities, including working with leaders, activists, peer educators, and others to implement culturally relevant positive improvements and community developments.

  • ASDF does not believe in the neo-colonial development model. We are led by a South Sudanese refugee. ASDF rejects any form of economic exploitation of Africa and her resources.
  • Direct Action: ADSDF believes that waiting for others to change the world is simply not good enough. Change starts with a small group of people taking action. ASDF is that group of people. We are a grassroots organization with big goals and we believe there is no goal too big to accomplish.
  • Our focus is on sustainability by supporting locally directed development solutions, rather than trying to change or coerce development to profit outside interests
  • Empower local people using different approaches and models as ways to encourage and educate them, especially youth, women, and young adults to take action now.
  • ASDF is committed to equal opportunities and all volunteer recruitment decisions will be based on merit, suitability for the role and experience. Volunteer recruitment decisions will not be influenced by race, nationality, religion, ethnic, sex, marital status, family status, sexual orientation, disability, age or other types not even to do with travel with our Team on the ground in Africa. ASDF fully endorses a working environment free from discrimination and harassment.
  • ASDF understands that when local people get involved and participate in projects that improve their lives, change has the potential to be owned by the people while working alongside significant community leaders and other stakeholders.
  • We pledge to be fair, honest, and accountable. It is our obligation and commitment to report our financials and deliverables to donors and stakeholders alike.
  • ASDF understands that we must, and will always, take preventative measures to guard against corruption, mismanagement, and inefficiencies in order to set an example of positive change in the communities in which we operate.
